Passengers can reach the John Wayne airport from the I-405 (San Diego) Freeway, the SR-55 (Costa Mesa) Freeway, and the SR-73 (Corona Del Mar) Freeway (also known as the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Toll Road.

In the center of the Terminal building, the Lower Level houses Arrivals and the Baggage Claim. Departures are on the Upper Level, which connects to the Terminal A and B gate areas. There is also a Mezzanine Level; this is the location of United Airlines' Red Carpet Club and American Airlines' Admirals' Club respectively.

Terminal A

Passengers flying on Alaska, American, American Eagle, Continental, Delta, and Delta Connection (Skywest) pass through a security check point to enter Terminal A. Flights operate from gates 8 though 14-C. Airlines located in Terminal A deliver baggage to claim carousels 3 and 4.

Terminal B

Passengers flying on Aloha, Mesa, Northwest, Southwest, United, United Express, and US Airways pass through a security check point to enter Terminal B. Flights operate from gates 1-C through 7. Airlines located in Terminal B deliver passenger luggage to claim carousels 2 and 3.
