Kansai International Airport Address1-banchi, Senshu-kuko KitaIzumisano-shi, Osaka 549 8501, Japan Website The Kansai International Airport, colloquially known as Osaka Airport or Kankuu, mainly serves the cities of Osaka and Kobe. About 16 million passengers pass through this airport every year, about the same as for the nearby Osaka International Airport (which, despite its name, is entirely domestic). The airport was built in the late 1980s on a man-made island in Osaka Bay. Due to concerns about earthquakes and the possible sinking of the artificial island, a great deal of care and money was poured into the civil engineering design of the airport. The time and expense paid off in 1995, when Kobe was struck by an earthquake. Despite significant death tolls on nearby islands, the airport stayed intact. In 1998, the airport was again tested by a typhoon with winds of up to 200 km/hour, but remained standing. The airport has only one terminal, but it is four stories tall and 1.7 kilometers long. Designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, it was voted as one of ten "Civil Engineering Monuments of the Millennium" by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2001. The single terminal serves a number of international carriers that fly all over the world, including numerous smaller cities in South Asia and the Middle East. The North Wing, with gates 1-16 and 101-103, serves Air Canada, Tahiti Nui, Alitalia, All Nippon, Asiana, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, EVA Air, Finnair, Garuda Indonesia, KLM, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, MIAT Mongolian, Northwest, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Nepal Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Turkish Airlines, United and Uzbekistan Airways. The South Wing, with gates 26-41 and 111-113, servies Air Caledonie, Air China, Air France, Air India, Air New Zealand, China Eastern, EgyptAir, Emirates, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Philippine Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines. Domestic carriers, which leave from gates 16-26, 201, 202, 211 and 212, are All Nippon and Japan Airlines. Terminal MapsTerminal MapWeitere Informationen über Osaka Kansai International Airport
